What Is MLCP Pipe?
The Different Terms You’ll Hear Explained:
MLCP (Multi-Layer Composite Pipe)
The technical name: a layered pipe made up of an aluminium core and inner/outer plastic layers. Strong, durable, and easy to work with.
Underfloor Heating Pipe
Because MLCP has been widely used for many years in underfloor heating, it’s often referred to simply as underfloor heating pipe.
PEX-AL-PEX Pipe
An MLCP type made with cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) layers around the aluminium core. Strong and rigid, it performs well under higher pressures and temperatures.
PERT-AL-PERT
Another MLCP type, using Raised Temperature Polyethylene (PERT) instead of cross-linked PEX. More flexible and easier to install, while still maintaining excellent strength and reliability. It also retains its thermoplastic properties, which can make recycling more straightforward.

Where You’ll See It Used
- Underfloor heating – the traditional application, with coils that make large, joint-free circuits simple to install.
- General plumbing & heating – now commonly used instead of copper for hot and cold water, radiator circuits, and system connections.
- Commercial projects – supplied in coils or straight lengths, with press, compression, or push-fit fittings to suit different sites.
- Loft spaces and behind walls – flexible and easy to run in tight spaces where rigid pipework can be awkward.
Installer Exchange: Tips of the Trade
When using PERT-AL-PERT, take advantage of its flexibility: unroll it like a wheel, not by pulling from the coil, to avoid kinks.
Tools
Most MLCP systems use press fittings, which require the correct press tool with the right jaw profile (U, TH, or H depending on the brand). These are widely available for hire or purchase — and LoCO₂ Heat can supply and quote for the tools if required.
